Unit Converter: Tips & How-Tos
Best Practices
Accuracy
- Always check which gallon you mean. The US gallon (3.785 L) and the UK imperial gallon (4.546 L) differ by about 20%. Unit Master lists them separately — confirm you have the right one before copying a result.
- Enter full precision, round at the end. Type the most precise value you have; rounding early compounds errors. Only round the final converted result to the precision your project actually needs.
- Verify temperature sign before copying. Negative Celsius values are common for cold weather and refrigeration. A quick sanity check — 0 °C = 32 °F and 100 °C = 212 °F — catches copy-paste errors instantly.
- Distinguish area from linear units. Converting length does not convert area at the same factor. 1 ft² equals 929 cm², not 30.48 cm². Use the Area category for any surface measurement.
- Use SI prefixes to avoid unwieldy numbers. If your result has many trailing zeros, switch to a larger SI unit (km instead of m, kg instead of g) so the number stays readable and less error-prone when shared.
Speed & Workflow
- Use the swap button, not manual re-entry. The ↔ swap button flips from-unit and to-unit and recalculates instantly. Re-typing the result into the other field risks introducing typos.
- Copy the full decimal, truncate later. Use the copy button to grab the full-precision result. Truncate in your document or spreadsheet, not in the converter, so you preserve maximum accuracy throughout your workflow.
- Chain conversions through a base unit. If no direct pair is available, convert to an SI base unit first (e.g. inches → cm → mm). Two steps combined are still faster than hunting for an obscure direct pair.
- Install the PWA for offline access. Add Unit Master to your home screen from your browser's share menu. After the first load, all non-currency converters work without an internet connection.
- Bookmark the specific tool URL. Each converter has its own URL (/converter, /cooking, /currency). Bookmark the specific page so you land directly on the right tool rather than navigating from home each time.
Travel & International
- Convert speeds before road trips abroad. UK speed limits are in mph; European limits are in km/h. A quick pre-trip conversion prevents inadvertent speeding when you are used to a different system.
- Match volume units to the local fuel pump. US fuel is sold in US gallons, UK fuel in litres, Canada in litres. Select the correct volume unit so fuel efficiency comparisons make sense.
- Check local measurement customs for body measurements. Height and weight conventions vary — UK uses stone and feet, the US uses pounds and feet, most of the world uses kg and cm. Know which system you need before entering a value.
- Convert clothing size weights to avoid ordering errors. International clothing size charts often reference body weight in kg or lbs depending on the brand's home country. Knowing both helps you order online with confidence.
- Use metric as a common baseline for scientific work. When sharing measurements internationally or with colleagues who use different national standards, convert everything to SI units first so there is no ambiguity about which system was intended.
Common Pitfalls
- Don't confuse mass and weight. Mass (kg, lbs) is a fixed property of an object; weight is the force of gravity on that mass. For everyday conversion purposes they are treated the same, but in engineering and science the distinction matters.
- Fluid ounces and ounces are different units. A fluid ounce measures volume (29.57 ml); an ounce measures weight (28.35 g). They are easy to confuse in recipes — confirm which one the recipe means before converting.
- Check whether your knots are nautical or speed knots. Speed knots (used in aviation and maritime) equal 1.852 km/h. This is always the meaning in the Speed category. A distance in nautical miles uses a different converter.
- Temperature conversions are not linear from the same origin. Unlike length or weight, temperature conversions involve an offset (32 for Fahrenheit, 273.15 for Kelvin). You cannot simply multiply by a ratio — always use a proper formula or converter.
How-to Guides
How to convert feet and inches to centimetres
Common when filling height fields on international forms or medical records.
- Select the Length category from the category picker.
- Choose 'Feet' in the From field and 'Centimetres' in the To field.
- Type your height in decimal feet (5 ft 10 in = 5.833 ft).
- Read the result — 5.833 ft ≈ 177.8 cm.
- Use the copy button to paste the result into your form.
How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius for a recipe
Most US recipes give oven temperatures in °F; most European ovens are labelled in °C.
- Select the Temperature category.
- Choose 'Fahrenheit' as the From unit and 'Celsius' as the To unit.
- Enter the oven temperature from the recipe (e.g. 350).
- The result appears instantly — 350 °F ≈ 176.7 °C.
- Round to the nearest 5 °C on your oven dial (175 °C is a common setting).
How to compare metric and imperial package weights
Useful when comparing prices across brands that use different unit labels.
- Select the Weight category.
- Set From to the unit on the first package (e.g. Ounces) and To to the unit on the second (e.g. Grams).
- Enter the weight from the first package.
- Note the gram equivalent and compare with the second package's label to calculate price-per-gram.
How to convert km/h to mph for a vehicle spec sheet
Car specs from Asian and European manufacturers are typically listed in km/h.
- Select the Speed category.
- Choose 'km/h' in the From field and 'mph' in the To field.
- Type the km/h figure from the spec sheet.
- Copy the mph result to use in your comparison or documentation.
How to convert litres to US gallons for a tank capacity
Aquarium sizes, fuel tanks, and water storage are often labelled in litres outside the US.
- Select the Volume category.
- Set From to 'Liters' and To to 'Gallons'.
- Enter the litre capacity.
- The US gallon result appears immediately — note that 1 L ≈ 0.264 US gal.
How to convert square metres to square feet for a property listing
Property sizes in many countries are listed in m²; US buyers often expect ft².
- Select the Area category.
- Set From to 'Sq Meters' and To to 'Sq Feet'.
- Enter the m² figure from the listing.
- The ft² result appears — for example 85 m² ≈ 915 ft².
- Use the copy button to paste the value into your listing or message.
How to use the swap button to reverse a conversion
Useful when you realise you entered the units backwards after getting a result.
- Complete your conversion as normal.
- Click or tap the ↔ swap button between the two unit selectors.
- The From and To units flip instantly and the value recalculates.
- No need to re-enter the number — the original result becomes the new input automatically.
How to convert miles to kilometres for a running app
GPS fitness apps and race registrations often list distances in miles even when you prefer km.
- Select the Length category.
- Set From to 'Miles' and To to 'Kilometers'.
- Enter the race or route distance in miles.
- Copy the km result to enter into your app's target distance field.
