Area
Area measures the extent of a two-dimensional surface. It is derived from length — one square metre is the area of a square with sides of one metre. Area is encountered in property listings (square feet or square metres), land measurement (acres and hectares), floor plans, and geography. The same units are used around the world, but the preferred units differ: the United States favours square feet and acres; most other countries use square metres and hectares.
Units
- Square Metres (m²): The SI unit of area — the area of a square with sides of one metre. Scale: Slightly smaller than a standard parking space (which is about 15 m²). Example: A king-size bed occupies roughly 4 m².
- Square Kilometres (km²): One million square metres (1 000 m × 1 000 m). Used for large geographic areas. Scale: The area of a medium-sized city district. Example: Manhattan island has an area of about 59 km².
- Square Miles (mi²): One mile × one mile — exactly 2.589 988 km². Scale: About the area of a large town centre. Example: Central Park in New York covers approximately 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²).
- Square Feet (ft²): One foot × one foot — exactly 0.092 903 m². Scale: About the area covered by a large floor tile. Example: A typical US apartment is 800–1 200 ft² (74–111 m²).
- Acres (ac): Exactly 4 046.856 422 4 m² (or 43 560 ft²). Historically the area a yoke of oxen could plough in one day. Scale: Roughly the area of a standard American football field excluding end zones. Example: A typical suburban house lot in the US is 0.1–0.25 acres.
- Hectares (ha): 10 000 m² (100 m × 100 m). The standard unit for land area in agriculture and real estate outside the US. Scale: About 1.5 times the size of an international football pitch. Example: A standard football pitch is 0.71 hectares (1.76 acres).
Key Facts
- One hectare = 2.471 acres; one acre = 0.4047 hectares — both measure agricultural land but are used in different countries.
- The acre was originally defined as the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plough in one day — typically a strip about 220 yards long by 22 yards wide.
- Converting length units requires squaring the ratio: 1 foot = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.0929 m² (not 0.3048 m²).
- Russia spans approximately 17.1 million km² — the largest country by area, over 170 times larger than the UK.
- The Vatican City, the world's smallest country, covers just 0.44 km² (109 acres).
